Made to Sit Naturally in its Surroundings

Protector™ – Straw feels inherently at home within the Australian landscape. Its softly pigmented finish enhances the natural character of the timber while giving it a light, contemporary expression. The colour sits comfortably within coastal, rural and urban palettes, allowing timber elements to feel connected to their surroundings rather than imposed upon them.

Bringing Light into Contemporary Design

Where darker finishes can add visual weight, Straw reflects light and helps architecture retain an open, relaxed atmosphere.

Its warm blonde tones make it particularly suited to:

  • Coastal homes
  • Courtyard houses
  • Pavilion architecture
  • Multi-residential developments
  • Concrete-and-timber homes
  • Education and commercial projects

Used across Cladding, Screening, Soffits or Pergolas, Straw brings warmth and texture while maintaining a light architectural presence.

Architectural, not Rustic

Protector – Straw is designed for a distinctly contemporary expression of timber. Its understated blonde-gold tone avoids the orange and yellow appearance associated with some traditional timber finishes. Instead, it brings warmth and material depth without competing with the wider architectural palette.

Straw pairs naturally with:

  • Off-form and precast concrete
  • Render
  • Natural stone
  • Black steel
  • Zinc and Colourbond roofing
  • Glass and other lightly reflective surfaces

Concrete’s Perfect Partner - The Warmth Behind Modern Architecture

Concrete brings solidity, structure and restraint. Timber introduces warmth, softness and a more tactile human quality.

Protector – Straw creates a natural bridge between the two materials. Its sunlit tone softens the coolness of concrete while allowing strong architectural forms to remain the focus.

When used as screening, Vulcan® in Protector™ – Straw can provide privacy, solar control and visual texture while retaining a light, refined appearance. The result is a warmer, more human expression of concrete-led architecture.

At Hopetoun Residence, Vulcan® Cladding in Protector™ – Straw creates a warm counterpoint to the concrete form, softening and developing character over time.

This video shows Vulcan - Bandsawn, Straw weathering over a 6 month period. As timber is a natural material, colour variation may occur. Colour may change or fade as part of the weathering process.

Designed to Weather Gracefully

Protector – Straw begins with a refined blonde-gold appearance and evolves naturally in response to sunlight, exposure and its environment.

Rather than remaining static, the timber develops character over time, helping architecture settle into its landscape as it ages. Regular maintenance can be used to refresh and preserve the pigmented finish, while less frequent maintenance will allow the colour to lighten and weather more visibly.

Protector is Abodo’s water-borne penetrating timber finish, developed specifically for Abodo timber using refined plant oils, UV protection and a water-barrier composition for exterior performance. Learn more about Protector.
