For this home in the Waikato settlement of Whatawhata, Abodo Vulcan Decking has been used to create a series of outdoor spaces, lending opportunities for sheltered al fresco dining and private bathing, as well as spots to enjoy the sun.

Set on generous grounds, all that was missing from this modern family home was a series of decks to provide sheltered outdoor living areas and places to soak in the summer rays.

Many opportunities to get outside are provided with an outdoor bath in a private spot overlooking established planting, a sheltered al fresco dining zone spilling out from the living space, and sun-drenched decking outside the master bedroom.

The design was undertaken by Insignia Design, with the build carried out by local construction company Clark Brothers Construction Ltd and homeowner Rowdy Mcintosh. A project manager and builder by trade, Rowdy was quick to specify Abodo for the decking on this home, as a product that was familiar to both himself and the build team.

“We wanted to use a decking product that didn’t bleed or move too much, a product where the gauging was millimetre perfect on every length,” he says, adding that he has been using Abodo on builds for over four years. “The low maintenance aspect of the decking is perfect, there’s no need for regular re-staining and you don’t get cupping of boarding like you might get with more expensive products.”

An uncoated finish was chosen to allow the decking to naturally fade and blend into the native landscaping around the home. This means the decking doesn’t require re-staining, but just needs to be maintained with an annual wash.

Vulcan Decking is created using thermally modified Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified New Zealand grown plantation pine, which is treated with an organic preservative that gives it a high level of water repellency and durability.

The thermal modification process involves steam and high temperatures of over 190 degrees celsius, followed by a cooling and reconditioning phase, resulting in a timber that is stable in any climate and weather. It also helps to reduce the resin content of the timber, so that it doesn’t bleed, and produces an homogenous brown tone that ties in well with most landscaped areas.

With native trees and shrubbery surrounding it, this home takes on a new life with the decks in place, making outdoor living inviting and enjoyable.
