Salt Is In The Air: Unique Timber Landscape

This unique timber structure recreates the ocean's salt spray, using untreated Douglas fir.

In the inland German town of Bad Kreuznach, local people have been erecting large structures designed to recreate the salt spray of the ocean for generations.

A stroll through the valley is not only good for your health but an educational walk through the history of salt extraction (read more here).

The wood structures are made from untreated Douglas fir, and in a unique reaction with the silicates in the salt water the timber is preserved for 30-40 years without preservative chemicals.

Learn more about silicates and how they can be used as a modern wood finish here.
